Biking
Port Angeles was designated a "Bicycle Friendly Community" in 2000. It has improved its roadbed shoulders to make biking around town safer and easier. Port Angeles and the Peninsula Trail Coalition have completed another major portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail (fat tires recommended). Currently 30 miles of the Olympic Discovery Trail are completed with another 30 miles funded and heading toward construction, mostly west of Lake Crescent. Below you fill find some suggested off road bike trips. View our Day Trips section which has several road trips as well.
Less Technical Mountain Bike Routes:
Spruce Railroad Trail: An easy trail along Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park. This one is for mellow group and family rides, and for enjoying the beauty of the lake. Pass the Shadow Mountain Grocery on 101, right on East Beach Road. Beyond Log Cabin Resort, look for the trailhead signs. - Also see in Day Trips Section
Olympic Discovery Trail: A rail trail, it will eventually go from Port Townsend to Port Angeles, and possibly points west. It is unpaved, but level, perfect for families. Be sure and visit Railroad Bridge Park on the Dungeness River near Sequim. Call the Peninsula Trail Coalition number below for help in finding the best section for you.
More Technical Mountain Bike Routes:
The Foothills Trail: A DNR trail just south of Port Angeles. It is seven to nine miles long, depending on how you ride the loops, and moderately technical, a fast, fun ride. Follow 101 W. from downtown Port Angeles to the turnoff to Black Diamond Road. Go S. on Black Diamond and turn left on Little River Road, go one mile and turn left on the first forest road.
Mount Mueller Trail: A DNR trail just west of Lake Crescent. Steep from the start, it doesn't let up until a somewhat technical ridge section, then descends the face of the mountain in a long and wonderful downhill. This trail is popular with horseback riders, so watch out for them. From the west end of Lake Crescent on 101, go about three miles and look right for trailhead signs. And there are miles and miles of quiet gravel roads through the forests of the Olympic foothills. There are even a couple of nice rides to hot springs (one on a paved road) in Olympic National Park. Check with the appropriate agencies listed below for maps and directions, and for trail and road closures.
