Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival – Get Crackin’

GET CRACKIN’ and taste the bounty of the Olympic coast with fresh whole Dungeness crab at the 7th Annual Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival, presented by Westport Shipyards, Inc. and Windermere Real Estate. The Festival is Saturday and Sunday, October 11-12, 2008, in Port Angeles, Washington. “Crabfest” is the annual celebration of the region’s diverse bounty - the seafood, agriculture, and maritime traditions and the breathtaking coastal environment.  The featured crustacean, the Dungeness Crab, was named after the village of Dungeness near Port Angeles. The Festival takes place downtown at the Port Angeles City Pier and Red Lion Hotel overlooking the beautiful Straits of Juan de Fuca, and Victoria, BC.  Hours are 10am-8:30pm on Saturday, and10am-5:00pm on Sunday. Admission is free and covered events make for family fun whether rain or shine! More than 2,000 parking spaces are available throughout Port Angeles.

In the 7,000 square foot food pavilion, Windermere Real Estate Crab Central the Red Lion Hotel, you’ll find an old-fashioned Crab Feed where thousands of pounds of live crab are cooked and served with fresh corn and cole slaw.  The bounty also includes crab cakes, wild salmon, oysters, mussels, and clams, with more than 20 individual dishes prepared by Olympic Peninsula restaurants including: Dungeness Crab Cake Company, Joy’s Wine Bistro, Mystery Bay Seafood, Port Angeles Crabhouse, Sabai Thai, and Toga’s International Cuisine.  Wine tasting is provided by Olympic Peninsula Wineries, there is Northwest beer and great live music at the Jim’s Pharmacy Stage.

Get crabbing and join in the Wilder Auto and High Tide Seafood Grab a Crab Tank Derby, Sunday, from 10am-4pm.  Located on the Port Angeles Pier, participate in this unorthodox derby by crabbing from large holding tanks using crab snares and bait.  Festival volunteers will be on hand to show you how to catch, cook and clean the famous crustaceans. Catch a tagged crab and win cash or gift prizes, and you can purchase your crabs to take home cooked or uncooked! Also on the pier are more than 50 crafts and merchants booths, more food, and children’s activities.

The First Federal Education Pavilion features cooking demonstrations with local and regional chefs including Jason Wilson from “Crush.” Environmental, marine, and agricultural exhibits are also featured.
