Swim little salmon swim!
Summer Coho salmon are leaping out of the water as they swim upstream against a strong current at the Sol Duc Salmon Cascades in Olympic National Park. The salmon begin showing up for the upstream migration in the middle of September and are expected to be visible for about four weeks. The Sol Duc is the only river on the North Olympic Peninsula that sees summer Coho return to its waters. You can watch them in the Cascades witch are located 28 miles west of Port Angeles. Head south on U.S. Highway 101 at Milepost 219 into Olympic National Park on Sol Duc Hot Springs Road. Six miles down the road you'll find the well-marked parking area for the Cascades. There's a viewing platform from which you can watch the leaping salmon. Or you can hike just downstream of the Cascades this will give you a great angle to observe the fish. Bring your camera, but not your fishing rod. The Cascades are closed to fishing.

A fashionably good cause on Saturday!
Come join us on Saturday October 2nd at Maurice's, the clothing boutique (104 W. First St.) For the second annual "Rescues & Runaways" fashion show. At the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain, outside the shop at First and Laurel streets, models will show off Maurice's fall fashions, along with a few of the adoptable animals at the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society. Music for the show will start at 2 p.m., and admission is free. There will also be a silent auction, with all of the proceeds going to the Humane Society. Maurice's is also collecting donations of pet food, cat litter, pet toys, cleaning supplies and plain old cash for the Humane Society, whose shelter is located at 2105 West U.S. Highway 101. Those who come in with donations of money or pet supplies will receive coupons for 20 percent off regular-priced items at Maurice's. The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society is "overwhelmed" with adult dogs and cats, so they are offering a 50 percent discount on adoption fees, which range from $35 to $100. On Saturday, just a few adoptable dogs will attend the downtown Port Angeles show, while the Humane Society will have its "look book," an album of dogs and cats needing homes, on hand for would-be adopters to thumb through. It's a great cause and a fun way to kick of the fall season!
For details about the Rescues & Runaways event, visit www.maurices.com or phone 360-452-2266. To learn more about adopting a pet, visit the humane society's website, www.CCHumane.com.
