'Last year was my first RtH and it was the funnest ride of the
whole season. I'm bringing three friends this year and we're staying a
couple of nights so we can hit the ODT as well as RtH.
Can't wait! Thank you!' - ML
Information for the 2017 Ride
Registration: Riders can register between 10AM and 4PM Friday Aug 4 and Saturday Aug 5 at the Port Angeles Visitor Center located at 121 E. Railroad Ave, Port Angeles, WA.
Day of Ride registration will open at 6AM Sunday morning at the Peninsula College Parking lot at 1502 E Lauridsen Blvd, Port Angeles, WA.
Reserve your place in the ride by paying for registration now -- CLICK HERE.
Vancouver Island Cyclists' Registration: Register through the Black Ball Ferry Line HERE and save $$! Registration with Black Ball includes your Ride the Hurricane ride fee -- together, heavily discounted (we're trying to help our Canadian friends join us despite the current exchange rate!). For our Vancouver Island neighbors, there will be registration on the 6:10AM Victoria departure of the Coho Ferry on the morning of the ride, Sunday. This will allow cyclists the option of proceeding directly to the Hurricane Ridge Road without stopping at Peninsula College. We will have a shuttle meeting that first ferry in Port Angeles, for any riders who would like to have their gear transported to the Peninsula College registration -- for pickup at the end of their ride, on the way back to the ferry. Departures that day back to Victoria, out of Port Angeles, are at 12:45pm, 5:20pm, and 9:30pm.
Hurricane Ridge Road closed to vehicles, open for cyclists, 7:00am - 12:00pm: the road opens to vehicles at noon and all cyclists are encouraged to be off the road at that time.
When you register online HERE, you will also have the opportunity to donate to the either or both the Washington's National Park Fund (to support the Olympic National Park) and the Peninsula Trails Coalition (to support the Olympic Discovery Trail)!
Event Description: This unique event allows cyclists to have the famed Olympic National Park Hurricane Ridge Road all to themselves and free of vehicles from 7am-noon. This is not a race but a recreational ride open to all abilities and ages.
Day of Ride Registration for all ride option opens at 6am at the Peninsula College parking lot. (Follow the signs) Riders may start the longer ride from the Peninsula College parking lot using the lower ridge road after registration, but the Heart Of The Hills access gate to the upper section of the Hurricane Ridge Road will not open until 7AM at which point all cyclists can proceed.
FYI all cyclists must show the official event wrist band in order to proceed past Heart Of The Hills.
Cyclists have three options for ride starting points:
1) at the entrance gate by Heart Of The Hills Campground for a 24 mile round trip (register first at Peninsula College -- parking can be limited at this location, so recommend you start early from here).
2) from the Peninsula College parking lot registration, which is 36 miles round trip or from near sea level (700' altitude).
Note: The Option 1, 24 mile round trip, starts at roughly 1100'; and the Option 2, 36 mile round trip, starts at 700' -- the Hurricane Ridge summit is at 5200’.
3) from sea level to the Hurricane Ridge summit of 5200’. This additional portion also starts at Peninsula College, but then heads down (north on) Ennis Street to the former Rayonier Mill site where you can access the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT). Take the ODT trail West to Francis Street Park, then head up Francis Street two blocks, and turn left on Georgiana. Take Georgiana one block and turn right on Race Street and continue on Race to Hurricane Ridge. This additional portion will add 5 miles, for a total ride of 41 miles.
The lower part of Hurricane Ridge Road, before Heart of the Hills, is not closed to traffic, so please ride single file and be mindful of vehicles. The Hurricane Ridge Road from the Heart of the Hills entrance station will be closed to vehicles except for a few event support vehicles so please be aware. Remember cyclists will be coming down at speed, so it is important to ride in the right lane both going up and coming down. The ridge road will open to traffic at noon so all event riders need to be off the road by this time.
An optional and rather informal Post Ride Party will take place from 10am until 1pm at the Peninsula College registration parking lot -- and all cyclists and cyclists supporters are encouraged to stop by.
The event will supply 5 aid stations which will have water and snacks available, along with portable toilets. The Summit House at the top of Hurricane Ridge will be open, and snacks and beverages will be available. Celebratory “I Made it to the Top” photos will also be taken and available on line at the Chamber's Facebook page and as a quality print after the event.
Registration Cost is $50. All cyclists are required to sign a waiver (follow link for waiver) (only page 1 required for adult cyclists, additional page 2 is for under 18 cyclists) and all cyclists must wear a helmet. Signed waivers can be mailed, emailed to email@example.com, or bring it to registration.
Wrist Bands: The event uses wrist bands to identify a registered participant. You must pick this up at Day of Ride Registration (Peninsula College parking lot, or Coho Ferry dock for Vancouver Island cyclists), which will require that your registration is paid and your waiver form is signed.
